doing good within the community

The Tsunami Fund was sponsored by Western Union Money Transfer, Sri Lanka. A real-model of the thirsty crow fable where for every coin dropped in, the water level would rise a little. Brilliant way to do a little charity work as well as advertise.

1990 ads

An ad from the 1990s for Western Union:

Their 1990 "Everybody Needs Somebody" commercial:

Must've been some of the greater commercials back in the 90's. However, I have found it harder to find more recently produced ones. It wouldn't be too hard to believe that that they are overwhelmed their own growth and busy opening up new locations. If you didn't catch it, in the second commercial, they mentioned 16,000 locations. Comparing 16,000 locations then with 300,000 locations now, they are averaging 16,705 new locations each year for the last 17 years! Now I wouldn't mind owning a few company shares.

take them to the beach

I came across the image of Western Union foam slippers. When I tried doing an online search for images of other Western Union merchandise, no luck.

This seems to be more of an advertising product rather than something that people would purchase for practical use.

Western Union Telegraph Company now in Nova Scotia

This is an 1893 newspaper article that was placed in the Belcher's Farmer's Almanac stating the service provided to Nova Scotians. Interesting read.

can't hurt to err on the safe side

Western Union is doing its part in taking the necessary precautions to halt possible terrorist money transfers. As ABC News reports, they have blocked transfers from senders and receivers with names such as Mohammed and Ahmed.

January 27, 2006: end of Western Union telegram services

I was surprised that telegram services weren't discontinued earlier, when its services would be inefficient compared to emailing and texting services available when the Internet was made popular.

More info on telegram and its history is in the article:

a little short on cash?

Western Union money transfers is more convenient that going to the bank to do it in person. And quicker than getting it done online.

A while ago, I had located this TV ad for one of our first class projects. However, we didn't end up using it.

I've got to warn you, the video is a little blurry, but it does a good job advertising by placing emphasis on how fast it is to transfer.

anything you could want to learn...

You can learn from Wikipedia. This includes all you could want to know about Western Union.

"Western Union was founded in Rochester, New York, in 1851 as The New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company.

"After a series of acquisitions of competing companies by Hiram Sibley & Don Alonzo Watson the company changed its name to Western Union Telegraph Company in 1856 at the insistence of Ezra Cornell, one of the founders of Cornell University [1], to signify the joining of telegraph lines from coast to coast.

"Western Union completed the first transcontinental telegraph line in 1861. In 1865 it formed the Russian American Telegraph in an attempt to link America to Europe, via Alaska, into Siberia, to Moscow."

who says you can't go back in history?

I happened to come across this on the yog-sothoth.com website forums and thought that bloggers would be interested. (link: http://www.yog-sothoth.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=9296). A yog-sothoth.com user, FNH, has put together a telegram maker where you can enter in your own lines onto the telegram. So that means that you can now make your own 1920's Western Union telegram!

This is the telegram that I made:

And here's the link to the telegram maker:

Enjoy!
